Pen was born and raised in Udon Thani, Northern Thailand, on a rice farm in a remote village. The people there mainly live off the land to grow food to eat, than for financial gain. They all help each other and work extremely hard.
Owners Pen and Nick met at a trade conference in 2005 in Bangkok. They then married in 2012 and now have 2 children. In 2019 Pen secured a job as a deli manager and cook and made fantastic takeaway fresh food for local tradies, and local residents. Her Thai homemade spring rolls are now very famous, but we can talk about that another time.
In 2020 they bought a food trailer and on October 31st 2020 they opened The Bangkok Bean food trailer in the local Home Display Village in Googong with permission from the developer, and during Covid with lock downs and inability for people to eat indoors, nor leave the suburb, the business boomed in a big way. It was extremely hard work but great fun.
They have since moved to an indoor café restaurant, at Googong and now have a fully decked out commercial kitchen.
We love the business, and working together. We love the community spirit, and the staff that we have. Some have been with us since the beginning.
What we produce is very fresh and authentic, and people now come from all parts of Canberra and further, as ‘word of mouth’ has obviously prevailed.
We are doing this because I’m personally so proud of what Pen has done and what she has achieved in her life. She’s always followed her dreams and I can’t stand in her way. Her confidence levels and smile are what the business is all about, and she works to provide a perfect experience for our customers, as it gives her a warm heart and spirit, she says.
I would like help to enable her dream to continue, but with measured breaks, lots of rest and sleep, and new energy, so as to move this fantastic and unique culinary experience to the new levels it thoroughly deserves.
Nick
Co-Owner
